Starting a business is a challenge. Starting a business in a predominately-Caucasian industry as an African American is even more challenging. Seeing how it all goes from just a business to a legacy that continues to grow is priceless.
In 1980, the Ewing legacy began with a dream, a couple trucks and a fervent prayer. As a journeyman engraver for the Commercial Appeal, Charles Ewing Sr. had a picture of his life beyond his 9-5. While holding down a full-time job during the day, he also went to work for himself, moving families and businesses around town. In a quest for expansion, Ewing gained his interstate authority in 1990 and intrastate authority in 1993. He petitioned the Tennessee Department of Transportation for a certification that allowed for further travel and moving opportunities. This group held strict reigns on what businesses received this sanction – before Ewing, no minority-owned moving company held the benefit. Mr. Ewing, being faithful and diligent, learned that his full-time job could hinder his eligibility, so he resigned a week prior to the final proceedings.
As Mr. Ewing grew his business, the intent was to become a household name and staple within the community. Personally, Ewing joined various community boards from The Boys and Girls Club to the National Baptist Laymen Movement. At one point, Mr. Ewing served on more than 20 community boards, intending to influence the community and elevate minority voices in the area and around the world. As his personal mission grew, so did his business pursuit of the NBA Grizzlies ownership. This led to the global expansion of Ewing’s quality and professional moving services around the world.
Global impact can take time, patience, and perseverance, all of which Mr. Ewing has shown since the beginning. This year, his global mission takes another step toward a consistent reality by his most recent appointment as the Board Chair for Memphis in May. This year Memphis in May honors the Gold Country of Ghana and our very own Mr. Ewing will be host to the Ambassador of Ghana, Baffour Adjei Bawuah, and his delegation. This honor continues his personal work of fostering relationships for minorities and spreading the Ewing name around the world. Truly becoming a household name.
